How do I become a member of NJHS?

7th Grade Students! Are you interested in joining NJHS? If you have all A's or all A's and one B, you meet the academic requirements to join NJHS. For further information in terms of membership requirements, please reference the FAQs page of the NJHS website.

Invitations have been extended to 7th graders who meet the GPA requirements (3.8 GPA) in January based off their first semester grades in their homeroom classes. An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 19th at 5:30 p.m. through Microsoft Teams where interested students may learn more about NJHS and what we do.

**The deadline to complete the online NJHS New Member Commitment and RSVP form is Friday, 03/07/2025.

What is NJHS?

Pillars of Membership

Scholarship: Students must first meet this criterion to become candidates for membership. NJHS national policy requires that each chapter set a cumulative GPA as their scholarship criterion. At Cooley, this is a 3.8 GPA.
Service: This involves voluntary contributions made by a student and done without compensation. The Cooley Chapter requires evidence of service to either the school, the community or both. The requirement at Cooley is 5 hours per month.
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. The Cooley Chapter requires evidence of leadership from within school and the community.
Character: The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
Citizenship: In general, the student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice; and respects democracy.

Students who accept membership and are inducted into the chapter should be aware of the time and commitment involved with their membership. The chapter adviser provides new members with a written copy of the chapter’s membership obligations. These obligations include chapter meetings, chapter service projects and individual service requirements. The Cooley Chapter also charges $10 a year dues to help cover chapter expenses.

Membership Requirements

Students are required to maintain a 3.8 GPA – a student should not have any grade lower than a 3.0 (B)
Community service is the cornerstone of the National Junior Honors Society, students will be expected to complete 5 hours of community service every month (25 hours a semester) and submit their service logs to Mrs. Hopingardner – students should not receive compensation for any of their community service hours
There will be a $10 membership due (this helps us fund club activities and events)
NJHS members are model students and have an excellent behavior record with no office referrals

Past Service Projects

Water Station - Gilbert Race

Provide support, water and encouragement for runners along the trail behind the school. Set up and Clean up for the race throughout the day and once finished

Cooley Blood Drive

Students provide support to the American Red Cross for an on campus, community blood drive.

Open Arms Food Drive

Coordinating with CMS Student Council, raising awareness, collecting and donating food items, organizing and preparedness for the food pick up, NJHS recognizes the need to support community members who need support in the area of food and nutrition! Over 4000 items were donated in Spring 2023!

NJHS Holiday Service Projects

We will be engaging in 2 connecting Holiday Service Projects this year. In addition to our 2nd Annual Holiday Toy Drive we will also be making fleece tie blankets. Both projects will benefit the children at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Toy Drive
We will be holding our annual Toy Drive from December 1st to December 13th.
We will have a donation collection box in the front office at Cooley.
We are asking the students, teachers, staff, and families to donate new unwrapped toys this holiday season. As a club, we will be kicking off the toy drive by purchasing $200 in toys on behalf of Cooley Middle School.
We hope that with school-wide support we can collect more than 200 toys this year!

Fleece Tie Blankets
Our amazing NJHS students voted to spend club funds to purchase $200 of fleece fabric to start off our Tie Blanket making efforts. With this money we were able to purchase over 30 yards of assorted single-color fleece. We are asking that students interested in creating blankets bring in 1 to 3 yards of a patterned fleece (polka dots, designs, characters, etc.) to make a blanket or blankets for young kids, children, and teenagers (1yrd, 2yrd, and 3yrd pieces of fleece).
Note: According to Phoenix Children's Hospital there is a big demand for blankets for teenagers.
We will be making our tie-blankets on campus the week after the Thanksgiving break, date is still TBD.

Community Service Log

NJHS Community Service Log

Students will complete a service log each month of the school year documenting at least 5 hours of community service. If a student has trouble completing the hours they need to speak with an advisor to arrange to make up hours in a later month.

Support Our Organization: Tax Credit Donations

Tax Credit! Did you know that you can give your Arizona Tax Credit Donation to a specific club or group on campus? We are asking any families interested in supporting Cooley Middle School with a tax credit donation to consider giving your donation to the National Junior Honor Society. Your donation will help us in our mission of service to our school and our community and support our students as we grow our program over the coming years.
