Pillars of Membership

• Scholarship: Students must first meet this criterion to become candidates for membership. NJHS national policy requires that each chapter set a cumulative GPA as their scholarship criterion. At Cooley, this is a 3.8 GPA.
• Service: This involves voluntary contributions made by a student and done without compensation. The Cooley Chapter requires evidence of service to either the school, the community or both. The requirement at Cooley is 5 hours per month.
• Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. The Cooley Chapter requires evidence of leadership from within school and the community.
• Character: The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others. 
• Citizenship: In general, the student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice; and respects democracy. 

Students who accept membership and are inducted into the chapter should be aware of the time and commitment involved with their membership. The chapter adviser provides new members with a written copy of the chapter’s membership obligations. These obligations include chapter meetings, chapter service projects and individual service requirements. The Cooley Chapter also charges $10 a year dues to help cover chapter expenses.

Membership Requirements

• Students are required to maintain a 3.8 GPA – a student should not have any grade lower than a 3.0 (B)
• Community service is the cornerstone of the National Junior Honors Society, students will be expected to complete 5 hours of community service every month (25 hours a semester) and submit their service logs to Mrs. Hopingardner – students should not receive compensation for any of their community service hours
• There will be a $10 membership due (this helps us fund club activities and events)
• NJHS members are model students and have an excellent behavior record with no office referrals

We will be holding our induction in the Spring, all students will be notified when more information becomes available.

Invitations to apply to NJHS will be sent to 7th grade students with a 1st semester G.P.A. of 3.8 or higher in January. Students will be asked to complete an application discussing their academics, community service, and school involvement.
